Why is meiosis described as a process of reduction division?

Meiosis is the process by which gametes are formed. Gametes are haploid meaning they have half the amount of DNA material as any other cell. Specifically gametes have only one copy of each chromosome while all other cells in the human body have two copies of each chromosome ( chromosomes excluded). Therefore in the cell division process that is meiosis there is a reduction in the number of chromosomes within the cell.
